Land Acknowledgement

I want to begin by acknowledging my gratitude for this land on which I was raised, and on which I now live and work and have chosen as my home. I was born on stolen land and I want to pay my deepest respect to the Indigenous communities — past, present, and future — who are the original stewards of this abundant region that we now call Portland.

The Portland Metro area rests on traditional village sites of the Multnomah, Wasco, Cowlitz, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin, Kalapuya, Molalla, and many other tribes who made their homes along what we presently know as the Columbia River. I want to honor the vibrant presence of Indigenous folks within this city despite strategic colonialist and white supremacist efforts over hundreds of years, and to recognize their ongoing and profound contributions to our community.

As an independent designer I hope to uplift, support, and collaborate with Indigenous people and organizations in my community and beyond. Running a business (even a business of one) carries responsibility. Working as a designer whose role is largely visual communication and promoting certain ideas carries responsibility. And existing as a white, well-resourced individual in a community that sprawls across native land carries responsibility. Individually our impact is small, yet we must remember we each play an essential role in cultivating our collective future.

To the Indigenous people, Black folks, and People of Color who would like to work with me: I offer reduced sliding scale rates for those of you who otherwise wouldn’t have access to my services. I’m happy to work with you and to find creative ways to make your project possible! If this is you please get in touch and let me know in your email.

To all BIPOC web designers, graphic designers, copywriters, illustrators, photographers, or anyone who plays a role in creating websites and branding: I want to support you and to collaborate with you. I’m always looking for people to recommend clients to if they’re looking for something beyond my skillset, if I don’t have time to take on a project, or if we’re not a good match creatively. If this interests you please say hi! I would love to connect.

I’m continually exploring ways to challenge colonized structures and to support and promote Indigenous people, Black folks, and People of Color through my work, and I am always open to feedback or suggestions. Thank you <3
